APDW was founded at the Bucks County Kennel Club Show May 7, 2005. Since its founding, the group has held its Annual Awards Luncheon in New York the day before the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The highlights of the luncheon are the “Arthurs” – the Arthur Frederick Jones Awards for excellence in communication about purebred dogs, the sport, and the fancy; the Captain Arthur J. Haggerty Award for best
writing on dog training or dogs in service;  The Hot Digital Dog award for excellence in publications in electronic media; and  The Stonehenge, presented to an individual who has, over the years, contributed significantly to the sport.
APDW offers many benefits to its members. In addition to the Annual Arthur Awards Luncheon at New York City landmark restaurant Sardis, there are informal get-togethers and seminars in conjunction with dog shows in various parts of the United States.

Members have unlimited access to the organization’s website. They also receive the APDW newsletter, which contains articles on the history of the sport, writing tips, and the latest news in dogdom. The website and newsletter give members an opportunity to showcase their writing and to participate in webinars and other programs. Members are
encouraged to submit articles and ideas.

APDW alerts editors and publishers to the specialties of APDW members who are available for assignments. APDW also sends out releases about member activities.

In the past, news about APDW and its members has appeared in AKC Gazette, Dog World, Dogs in Review, Dog News, Pet Product News, PetChannel, CBS TV, and other print and digital publications.

Professional and amateur writers, editors, and other communicators who specialize in purebred dogs, the sport, and issues of interest to the fancy are invited to apply for membership in APDW. Information is on this website.
