Honors Arthur Winners

February 14, New York -- Arthur winners were honored today at the annual APDW Luncheon at Sardi's. Arthur Frederick Jones Award winners (see below) took home handsome Airedale trophies designed by Dannyquest for APDW. This breed was favored by Jones, the renowned purebred dog writer and long-time editor of the AKC Kennel Gazette (now the AKC Gazette).

The Capt. Arthur J. Haggerty Award, a German Shepherd Dog trophy created for APDW in the shape of the Captain's favorite breed, was presented by APDW board member Babette Haggerty, the Captain's daughter, to Lisa Hanks for her article "Pit Bull Ambassadors," which appeared in Dog World. The new Hot Digital Dog trophies, designed by APDW Vice President Tracie Laliberte, honor excellence in online writing about purebred dogs.

The finalists, listed below, were commended for their excellence in writing about purebred dogs, the sport, and issues that interest the fancy and educate the general public.

      APDW Website Shares Honors with

Member Liz Jarrell at DWAA Awards Dinner

APDW member Elizabeth M. Jarrell and the Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers (APDW) raked in the honors at the DWAA Awards Banquet, held Sunday evening after the APDW Arthur Awards Luncheon. Liz emailed us her good news from a snowdrift in Maryland, where she lives. She was one of several APDW members from the snowed-in mid-Atlantic states who missed Westminster 2010.

Liz won first place for her timely article that was published on the APDW website "Westminster is For Everyone."

She also garnered Pet Sitters International First-Canine Award for her humorous piece "Mr. Oliver Gets Distracted" in Off Lead & Animal Behavior. This essay was inspired by one of Liz’s beloved Australian Sheepdogs, who provide grist for many of her best pieces.

For “Just So,” her regular column in the national club publication Aussie Times, The Australia Shepherd Club of America, Liz again placed first.

Brian Patrick Duggan won first place for Single Breed Book with his Saluki: The Desert Hound and the English Travelers Who Brought It to the West. We met Brian at Sardi’s earlier that day at the APDW Arthurs, where his book was a finalist in the Nonfiction Books category.

Congratulations to all winners and finalists of the 2010 APDW Arthur Awards. Well done!

A resounding "Bow Wow Wow!" to Arthurs Competition Chairman Tracie Laliberte. She and her blue-ribbon panel of judges tackled a daunting job and completed it on deadline! All remarked on the high caliber of the entries. Tracie not only coordinated the competition, but also designed the stunning trophy for the new award, The Hot Digital Dog.

A "Woof! Woof! Whoooooo!" to Arthur Awards Luncheon Chairman Pat Enright. This is the fifth year Pat has taken on this task, and again she did a fantastic job. The event seems to be more fun every year.

Thank you, Pat and Tracie -- and all you intrepid mushers who braved the snow to gather at Sardi's and make this occasion a memorable event!
